I managed to find strips of balsa wood from a hobby shop, i'm hoping that these strips will allow me to make base boards, mouldings, and a chair rail in the dining room. I'm also debating using them to make clapboard siding for the exterior, although at this point I haven't decided if I want to go with siding or make a stone exterior with clay.
I started a more snug dry fit and marked out where the paper would need to go in the dining room. As I plan on putting moundings in the corners as well as along the edges, I applied the paper to the walls separately. During the dry fit however I discovered that the wonderful ceiling paint I have been using adds just enough thickness that the tabs no longer fit in to the slots (gah). So out came the handy little exacto knife and I had to chisel the paint off the tabs to make it fit.
I have also discovered that getting the second floor installed *step one I may add* was ridiculously complicated. I'm literally terrified that I'm going to snap this tiniest of plywood, however it seems to hold up rather well. A few taps with the trusty hammer and I even managed to straighten the floor back out !
Today was also a bit of a supply gathering day. I tracked down a pasta maker to make the clay work a bit easier, I need to fashion a ceiling medallion with it first, and then it will be used to make roof shingles. Some more disintegrating foam brushes, and a trip to Lowes to get mistint paint (2.50/can rather than 18.00). Sadly they didn't have any white, but they did have a can of lavender which will look amazing on clapboard with the white gingerbread (I think).
I also got a pair of mitre pliers. I'm wondering if i still shouldn't have gone with the mitre box instead, but it seems so damned convenient to just snip the wood rather than sawing through the tiny tiny strips.
